StatePoint™ Liquid Cooling Technology Expected to Work Efficiently in Singapore’s Hot, Humid Climate

St. Louis, September 14, 2018 — Nortek Air Solutions, LLC, a leading provider of custom air handler systems, is pleased to announce the use of its patented StatePoint Technology® in a new, state-of-the-art Facebook data center. The new data center, located in Singapore, is Facebook’s fifteenth data center and the first engineered by the company in Asia.

Singapore is a major Asian technology center; however, the country’s high humidity and high temperatures make it challenging to construct an efficient data center in the area. StatePoint Liquid Cooling Technology is designed to reduce water consumption by up to 20% in such climates when compared to other indirect cooling systems. The average Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of existing data centers in the area is greater that 1.75. This system is expected to achieve a PUE of 1.19, making this new data center one of the most efficient in the region.

The StatePoint system uses a liquid-to-air exchanger in which water evaporates through a membrane separation layer to cool the data center. The liquid-to-air membrane exchanger prevents cross contamination between the water and air streams. With the addition of a pre-cooling coil, the system can maintain required cooling water and temperatures in humid climates using minimal supplemental mechanical cooling.

“We are excited and proud to be part of the innovations that enable Facebook to further their environmental stewardship efforts without compromising their operations,” said Bruno Biasiotta, CEO of Nortek.

Since 2015, Nortek Air Solutions has worked closely with the Facebook engineering team to develop StatePoint Technology. The goal was to engineer a cooling solution that could help address the sustainability issues facing large data centers. Facebook and Nortek Air Solutions announced the technology in June of 2018.
